Data Sciences and Operations
The Department of Data Sciences and Operations (DSO) provides students with quantitative and analytic skills needed to excel in today's data-driven business world.

The expertise of the over 50 faculty members in the DSO Department at Marshall spans three main disciplines: information systems, operations management, and statistics.

Information systems courses familiarize students with emerging technologies, digital transformation tools, and digital business models, which offer new ways to transform data into value for consumers and firms. Many of these courses involve field-based projects.
Operations management courses prepare students to design and lead flexible businesses that can capitalize on data-driven insights and that are sufficiently robust to survive the unexpected.
Statistics courses teach students how to extract actionable business insight and reliable forecasts from the "big data" collected by smart devices and e-commerce applications.
All faculty in the DSO department are very active in teaching, in research, and in various professional organizations. Several of them have earned prestigious research awards and honors, serve on editorial boards of major academic journals, and have won best-teacher awards.

The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in Business Analytics provides specialized skill sets for students who plan a career in today’s business world, where analytics is at the forefront. The degree signals to potential employers that the graduate is ready to utilize the tools and techniques that aim to turn data into meaningful business insights. Students will obtain the necessary skills for defining business analytics for data-driven decision making along with the hands-on experience using analytics to solve real-world problems.

AI for Business brings together the expertise of one of the top business schools and one of the top engineering schools in the country to create a new generation of tech-savvy business leaders.

Progressive Degrees (PDP)

Undergraduate students can utilize the PDP pathway to add a Masters of Science degree to deepen their education starting junior year. This pathway reduces the number of units needed to complete an MS degree, in some cases by as much as 1/3rd, allowing completion within one additional year depending on the program and individual student course plans.

The Master of Science in Business Analytics provides students with the skill and knowledge to become experts in business analytics and to advance their careers in the area of data analytics. Students in the program acquire the statistical and optimization tools necessary to analyze large and unstructured data sets and make optimal decisions to improve the performance of their organization. In addition, students develop the ability to effectively present complex data to high-level decision-makers. This program concentrates on business applications across different industries and functions including marketing, finance, operations management, retail, manufacturing, banking and health care.

Mohammed's research examines the economic and societal impact of digital marketplaces, with a focus on examining and measuring the role of traditional barriers, related to market structure, race, and expertise, among others, on limiting the equality of benefits derived from these platforms.
Arif Ansari
- Professor of Clinical Data Sciences and Operations
Arif Ansari is an expert in the area of data mining, business intelligence, data warehousing, and intelligent systems and technologies, a field in which he has fifteen years of research experience. He has published in IEEE Transactions on Systems and Man and Cybernetics.
Cosimo Arnesano
- Assistant Professor of Clinical Data Sciences and Operations
Cosimo Arnesano, Ph.D., MBA is a highly educated and experienced professional with a strong background in research services and business analytics implementation. With a Ph.D. in multiple fields and an MBA from the University of Southern California, Cosimo possesses a diverse skill set that includes fluorescence microscopy, biomedical engineering, Project/Operations Management, ML/AI, and more. His current interest focuses on how AI/ML can be applied to business processes, and their implications in the short and long run.

Murat Bayiz is a Professor of Clinical Data Sciences and Operations at Marshall School of Business. He has more than two decades of combined management consulting and academic experience and specializes in operations strategy.

Katerina Giannoutsou is a PhD student in the Data Sciences and Operations department in the Marshall School of Business. She previously obtained her bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Economics at New York University and worked as a Research Assistant at the Operations Research Center of MIT where she focused on healthcare operations. Her current research focuses in mechanism design and the dynamics of two-sided platforms.
